Kite-making is an ancient craft originated from China around 200CE. Since then, people have used it for military signalling and measuring distances. Over centuries, kites evolved from practical tools into symbols of culture, art, and recreation across Asia, the Middle East, and eventually worldwide. Kites are also a symbol of romance. Kites have their own language. In my eyes, a kite is a medium that supports distant conversations—words that cannot be spoken, messages for people far away, or words intended for nature, trees, grass, wind, or rabbits. Carried and driven by the power of the wind, kites transport these words and emotions, helping us communicate with people, objects, and the world beyond what we know. In this workshop, we will learn about the history of kites, the different types of kites and their making methods. Additionally, the workshop will include interactive activities where we will explore the possibilities of languages, try to develop ‘new languages,’ and use them to communicate with other participants. At the end of the workshop, you will be able to explore the inner dialogue of you and others through the making. Of course, you will have the freedom and space to let your own creativity spark. The workshop will be relaxed and fun, and we hope it will also be somewhat of a healing process. Over the course of these hours, we hope you will learn a new skill, create a beautiful kite, gain new insights into language, and different cultures, and express your emotions and stress in a relaxed environment. Use the power of the wind to whisper out the words you want to say. Join us if you are interested in this ancient craft and if you are interested in diverse cultures and languages .
